One of the most difficult things for me is to label the plants in the garden. If I would be tidy I had a perfect plan inside the house... Here are the labels I tried which do NOT work: - Everything with texta, after one year the sun has bleached the name out - Labels out of old containers yogurt and the like- nice idea but these disintegrate after a few months - Ice cream sticks, after a short time they get black and you cannot read the name anymore. At the moment I am experimenting with bought simple plastic labels and lead pen - at least I can reuse them when the plant dies. If I would have a table saw, I would cut thin strips out of wood and burn the name.

cut the top and bottom out of an empty coke can cut up one side with scissors, flatten, cut out squares to size, use letter punch and stamp variety name.

Sun bleaches ink, not much luck here either! For my personal use, I finally purchased the copper scratch on labels! Plastic leftover knives and a sharpie has lasted the longest for me and they don't make it a year!

If i may weigh in,
I find that white plastic knives work really well. i usually get them for about $25.00 for 1000. they last really long if you use a fine tip permanent marker. i have some that have been in the garden almost 2 years now. and i have some harsh sun. I've experienced minor bleaching but if i remember to go over them once a yer or so they stay legible for a long time.

I prefer to buy quality, UV resistant labels both for the garden (the large nursery row labels) and for the pots for sale, and use 5b pencil for the marking. It costs money but you factor that in the sale price. People will pay more for professionally presented plants.
BTW, where are you located Desertperma?

Great that you could join us here. Looking forward to reading about how you do things over there BTW, I am always looking for seeds of native edible plants from Western Africa.

Namibia - cool! And interesting because of all these different plants. I am approximately as high up as you, but a bit of a different climate.

Yeah its great cos Some plants that are annuals in cooler climates are actually perennial here. although i have a harder time with plants bolting due to the heat. Has anyone tried using "all-weather paper" to make labels?
